BIOLOGY - Advanced (Grade 9)

This course is an accelerated course that covers the biological principles within a one year program. Topics include a study of the scientific method, use and care of the compound microscope, the chemistry of life, cell structure, function and processes, mendelian and molecular genetics, evolution and biodiversity, ecology and living systems, and comparative vertebrate and human anatomy and physiology. An independent research project is an important part of the student's grade. The objective is that the student will gain a solid understanding of how living things function. There will be laboratory experiments and activities. Frog dissection may be part of the standard laboratory experience for this course. Alternatives to dissection are available, upon written request by a parent/guardian. This course has been aligned with the Massachusetts Science Curriculum Frameworks.

BIOLOGY - Part 1 & Part 2 - CP (Grades 9 & 10)

This two year course provides comprehensive coverage of biological principles. During the first year, topics include a study of the scientific method, use and care of the compound microscope, the chemistry of life, cell structure, function and processes, and mendelian and molecular genetics. During the second year, the course will cover classification, evolution and biodiversity, ecology and living systems, and comparative vertebrate and human anatomy and physiology. The objective is that the student will gain a solid understanding of how living things function. There will be laboratory experience for this course. Alternatives to dissection are available upon written request by a parent or guardian. This course has been carefully aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.

CHEMISTRY - Advanced (Grades 9, 10, 11)

The course is designed for sophomore students who have successfully completed College Biology. Topics described in College Chemistry, Part 1 and 2 are covered with selected covered topics in greater detail. These detailed investigations require independent inquiry and problem-solving along with communication of findings.

ESSENTIAL CONCEPTS OF BIOLOGY (Grades 11 & 12)

Essential Concepts of Biology is designed for students who have not passed the Biology MCAS exam. A diversity of learning methods are utilized to increase student understanding of the key concepts identified in the Massachusetts Learning Standards for Biology. Test taking skills will also be emphasized.

PHYSICS 1 - Advanced (Grades 11 & 12)

Physics is the study of how things work. Topics covered in this course include speed, acceleration, gravity, momentum, centripetal force and heat. Concepts are developed in a style that will allow students to relate physics to the real world. The course involves hands-on laboratory experiences, where students will be required to collect, analyze and draw conclusions from derived data. This is a two year course designed for College bound juniors and/or seniors. In order to achieve adequate preparation for college, it is strongly recommended that both years be taken. Science skills and physics concepts are integrated with mathematics and technology. The course focus is on problem-solving, hands-on learning and relevant subject matter. Learning methods cover a wide range from textbooks and teacher demonstrations to labs, videos and authentic research projects. Topics covered include forces and momentum.

PHYSICS 2 - Advanced (Grades 11 & 12)

This course is part of a two-year program that may be taken in any order. In Physics 2 we will study how energy, thermal energy, waves, sound, light, electricity, magnetism and electromagnetism impact the world around us. Concepts are developed in a style that will allow students to relate physics to the real world. The course involves hands-on laboratory experiences, which will develop the problem-solving skills of students. In the lab, students will be required to collect, analyze and draw conclusions from derived data. Logical and deductive thinking, problem solving and application will be emphasized.

CONCEPTUAL PHYSICS - Part 1 - CP (Grades 11 & 12)

This 2 year course is required for junior and/or senior students who are enrolled in industry-based vocational programs. Students in any other vocational programs can also benefit from this course, especially students who may pursue a college degree. The focus of this course is two-fold: the investigation of a variety of physics topics and the development of skills in experimentation and problem solving. Topics include: speed, acceleration, gravity, momentum, centripetal force and motion of the planets. Emphasis is placed on logical thinking, problem solving, and the use of basic algebra skills. Students planning to earn a Bachelor of Science degree should enroll in College Physics.

CONCEPTUAL PHYSICS - Part 2 - CP (Grades 11 & 12)

This 2 year course is required for junior and/or senior students who are enrolled in industry-based vocational programs. Students in any other vocational programs can also benefit from this course, especially students who may pursue a college degree. The focus of this course is two-fold: the investigation of a variety of physics topics and the development of skills in experimentation and problem solving. Topics include: heat, states of matter, sound, light, electricity, magnetism, radioactivity and nuclear reactions. Emphasis is placed on logical thinking, problem solving, and the use of basic algebra skills. Students planning to earn a Bachelor of Science degree should enroll in Physics 1 and 2 - CP.

ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY - Part 1 & Part 2 - CP (Grades 10, 11, 12)

This two-year course consists of an in-depth and concentrated study of the structural and functional levels of organization of the human body. Through lectures, videotapes, experiments and computer use, each Curriculum Activity Package (CAP) covers a separate system of the body and how each system relates to the body as a whole. Dissection of a sheep heart and brain are part of the standard laboratory experience for this course. Alternative activities are available upon written request by parent/guardian. This course is required for Health Assisting (11th & 12th Gr), Cosmetology (11th & 12th Gr), Fashion Technology (11th & 12th Gr) and Medical Assisting (10th & 11th Gr), and recommended for Graphic Arts (11th & 12th Gr) students.

APPLICATIONS OF SCIENCE 1 and 2 - CP (Grades 11 & 12)

These courses will survey how advances in technology have influenced the sciences and our world. Each term we will focus on a different area of science: environmental science, biotechnology, physics or chemistry. Basic concepts as well as in-depth analysis of technological applications will be covered in each area. Much of the material covered in class will come from primary sources such as research articles, papers, current developments, and student research. There is a strong emphasis towards relating these recent advances to our own world. This course is geared towards students who may not be participating in either college chemistry or college physics. Students may take this course as juniors or seniors for either one or two years.
