COURSE TITLE: Algebra I                                                                 Date April 2001

AUTHOR: David Chouinard

LITERACY COACH:  Sheila Stowell

TOPIC: Slope of a line

ESSENTIAL QUESTION:

Why is it important to be able to graph information.

Why is it important to find the slope of a line.

Why is it important to find the equation of a line.

CULMINATING TASK:

Using your knowledge of slope, equations of lines and graphing you will take a real life problem and find the solution by making a prediction from the given data.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:

1. Given a graph of a line or two points on a line you will find its slope.

2. Given a point and the slope or two points of the line you will find the equation of the line.

3. Given a list of terms related to this project you will define them.

4.) Given an open-response question about slopes and graphing data you will answer the question by completing the math frame.

Content Area # Standard

Algebra I 10.P.2

Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between various representations of a line. Determine a line’s slope and x- and y-intercepts from its graph or from a linear equation that represents the line. Find a linear equation describing a line from a graph or a geometric description of the line, e.g., by using the "point-slope" or "slope y-intercept" formulas. Explain the significance of a positive, negative, zero, or undefined slope.

THE PROCESS

Steps I Would Take

Start by viewing the video on slope in Activity #1. Try the problems in the activity on finding the slope of a line. Complete this activity because you will need this for Activity 2. When you have finished Activity #1 you can go on to Activity 2.

Read the explanation of an equation of a line. Go to the web link to practice finding the equation of a line. Complete the activity because you will need this for Activity #3 and Activity #4. When you have finished Activity #2 you can go on to Activity #3

Print the Vocabulary Sheet on a printer. Complete the vocabulary sheet by defining the terms in your own words. You should draw any pictures or diagrams that might help in your explanations.

Read the scoring rubric for your question and use the graphic organizer to help you with the question. Make sure you label and answer all the parts of the question. Hand in the question to your instructor so that it can be corrected.
